Wick Selection
Getting the wicking of your candle right is the hardest part of candle making, as not only do different diameter candles require different size wick but different waxes need different wicks to burn well.
There is a bewildering choice of wicks available on the market and you could spend many hours, or even days getting the wick right in tester candles. At That Flaming Candle Company we have kept the number of wicks available to a minimum, but they cover most candle applications. We have tested them in our waxes with fragrances and dye so we can advise you on the best choice for your particular candle application. As new wicks are tested we will offer them for sale.
All candle wicks are formed from cotton and are either bleached (hot burning) or unbleached (cooler burning). In addition to this most candle wicks have a ‘core’ which can be cotton, paper, nylon or thin metal. Combining these elements together gives the wick its unique burning properties.
Selecting the Wick:
Unlike many wick sellers we have coded our wicks to match the diameter of candles and have used paraffin wax candles as the basis for our findings - this is because paraffin uses the smallest wick for the diameter of the candle. All our wicks are coded for ease of selection and follow the same basic rules:
Example 1 – Wick by the meter:
EM75P – EM refers to our brand name of Easy Melt, which we have been using for the past six years. 75 relates to the diameter in mm of the paraffin candle it has been tested in. The letter at the end refers to the wick core. P = paper.
Example 2 –Pre tabbed & waxed Wick:
EMTS TEALIGHT – Again EM refers to our brand name, which in this case is followed by the wick core. TS = Tin silver. The word tealight refers to candles these wicks are suited to, as they are pre cut to length.
We supply bleached and unbleached candle wicks combined with one of three core types.
Cotton core – With the exception of our EM40F all our cotton cored wicks have undergone solutioning to increase the heat generated by the flame. Generally used in pillar candles as they are not self supporting and inclined to fall over in the high volumes of liquid wax generated in container candles.
Paper Core – Our paper cored wicks use unbleached cotton with the addition of twin recycled paper filaments. This is our most environmentally friendly, and popular, wick which is available by the meter and also pre-tabbed and waxed. These wicks are self supporting and excellent in container candles. They can also be used in pillar candles.
Tin Silver Core – Tin Silver produces a hot flame and our wicks have a single filament which also adds rigidity, making them suitable for pillar or container candles. Available pre-waxed and tabbed for Votive and Tealight candles, they work particularly well in beeswax candles.
Please note that all our wicks are manufactured in the UK exclusively for Endless Green Group Ltd. Should you choose to use another brand of wick with our product we will not be able to advise you on what combinations will work, as we do not test any other brand of wick.
